Hot August Nights!

In This Issue: Real Life over Reel Life; Our “Q3 Business Checklist” for business owners, and handling a WTF kind of year!

Let’s get right into it! We have ALOT going on for August but it’s Leo season so we should all be prepared to be illuminated, extra and extra active. As we approach the mid point of summer and a heat wave for many let’s also keep it a self care summer and prepare the glow for fall. August is a time for fun as much as it is for reflection, connections, and intentionalism. this could be the most important manifestation month of your whole year. So with that said, here are some things to do that are as much of a party as they are a priority. Life has been ‘lifing’ a lot so let’s start with that.

Real Life Over Reel Life

  1. Get up get out & get something - we only have so much time in a year. Use the additional sun rays and eager personalities to network while it’s still pleasant outside.

  2. If you live in California, or in Florida, Georgia or Texas it’s also a sweet summer. These states are prime picks for watermelon - grab a couple and treat yourself! The body hydration, cooling, natural sugars, and fulfilling but carb-healthy snack will invigorate your senses, increase antioxidants to put a yield to the yuck (eww), and help keep your skin soft and supple.

  3. Take advantage of good food and good weather with an extra boost to your inner circle. We all have the same 24 hours in a day - use these hot August days/nights to ramp up your support and growth circles for the quiet and dark seasons. We all know winter is coming soon and folks are 60% more likely to have more low/emotionally demanding days in the colder months than in the summer. Arm yourself ahead of time with some good people to help you be your most healthy self.

  4. Drop it like it’s hot! Everything trash that is. Clean out your personal space first - where ever you spend the most time. August is perfect for cleansing, deep cleaning, and intense removal. Cleaning and clearing intensifies self care habits, invites more joy, and removes emotional or mental attachments to things that no longer serve us.

  5. Tap into the better you with some simple self care goals for August:

    • Know your different comfort zones: use ‘keepsake zones’ to grow/advance, remove your ‘kill zones’ to decrease stagnation & procrastination.

    • Identify your personal truths: Improve your focus, boundaries, & freedoms by being firm in your active beliefs.

    • Celebrate yourself more often: gifts, achievements, ideas, & potential.

    • Take just 15 mins a day for your internal health: mind, spirit, emotions.

    • Take 30 mins at least 4 times a week for physical health.

Another hot topic in August amongst households and social media is revolutionary acts of progress. August is legendary for Black excellence, black commerce, and Black liberation movements/activists. Take some time this month to explore some historical Black figures such as Assata Shakur, Angela Davis, James Baldwin, Marcus Garvey, and other black revolutionaries and ways to improve the prison and justice systems for Black people. If you are a documentarian like me and want a good flick fix, check out Egalité for All: Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution. Other ways to support Black culture in August are to shop with micro-business owners, share brand stories and content, and refer new clients and businesses.

As for reels, real life, and what the future holds, we all know a few things to expect such as the recession, increased interest rates, traffic/congestion, and unavoidable stress. In the face of a lot of WTF moments already this year, let’s take a different approach to discuss some ways to consider where you fall in the scheme of things.

Handle Your Business

We all know that summer means sales and strategies when discussing business. But what many of us fail to do is plan appropriately for fourth quarter and end of the year. August is great for a few tedious but necessary tasks.

Q3 Business Checklist

  1. Financial Check-Ups: For the business and the executives.

  2. Overhead Haul: Start clearing out now, drop prices, give deals, decrease old stock.

  3. Wellness Lunch & Learns: Mitigate burn out, sick time, & turn over by tending to the mental/emotional needs of you and your team.

  4. Networking for Net-worth: Revisit new/casual connections to develop more intentional business connections, collaborations for EOY, and prospect opportunities for Q1/2023.

  5. Declutter, Debug, & Debunk: Clean up systems, files, spaces, processes, & projects by doing internal assessments & intake of the state of your business identity & structure.

  6. Audit for Excellence: Check everything for integrity, including administrative functionality, quality assurance, and corporate cohesion.

  7. Celebrate & Salute: Acknowledge the successes and achievements of employees, affiliates, contractors & collaborators.

Remember the business is counting on you to show as your best and build it up right. The key thing to remember in all of this is that change is imminent and you cannot control everything. Steady the brand for adjustments, ground yourself for effective leadership. And mostly, be mindful of your brand needs and kind to yourself.
